How to Install Bias Lighting Behind Your TV
Television viewing in a dark room often leads to eye fatigue, a condition caused by the sharp contrast between a glowing screen and the surrounding darkness. Bias lighting fixes this by providing a soft, ambient glow behind your set, which helps your eyes perceive the screen's contrast more naturally and makes the colors pop. When done well, the light should appear as a soft halo on the wall rather than harsh, visible points of light. Installing these lights is a straightforward process that takes very little time but significantly upgrades your viewing environment. The key is in the placement and ensuring your surface is perfectly clean so the adhesive strips don't peel off after a few days. Once installed, you will wonder why you ever watched TV without this subtle but impactful backlight.
- Wipe Down That Back Panel. Wipe the back of your TV chassis with a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Ensure you remove all dust, oils, and debris to guarantee the adhesive backing sticks permanently.
- Test the Path First. Hold the LED strip against the back of the TV to determine your routing path before peeling the backing. Aim to place the strip about two inches from the edge of the television casing for the best light diffusion.
- Bend Smart at Corners. If your LED kit doesn't include corner connectors, do not bend the strips at a sharp 90-degree angle. Instead, fold the strip into a small 'U' loop at the corners to maintain electrical continuity.
- Stick It Down Firmly. Peel the adhesive backing in small sections, pressing firmly as you work your way along the perimeter of the TV. Avoid touching the adhesive with your fingers to keep the bonding agent strong.
- Power Up Your Lights. Plug the strip into the TV's USB port if your model supports it. If your TV USB port doesn't have enough power or stays active when the TV is off, use a separate wall adapter.
- Hide the Wires. Use adhesive cable clips or small zip ties to secure any loose wiring slack against the back of the TV. Ensure no wires are hanging loose where they can be seen from the side of the screen.
