How to Build a Raised Deck
Building a raised deck involves setting concrete footings, installing posts and beams, adding joists, and finishing with decking boards and railings.
- Map Your Deck Foundation. Measure and mark your deck's footprint using spray paint or stakes and string. Check local building codes for setback requirements and obtain permits if needed. Mark footing locations every 6-8 feet along the perimeter and every 8 feet for interior support posts.
- Set Posts in Stone. Dig holes 2-3 feet deep and 12 inches wide for each footing location. The depth depends on your local frost line requirements. Pour concrete into each hole and insert galvanized post anchors while the concrete is wet. Allow 24-48 hours to cure completely.
- Raise Your Support Posts. Attach pressure-treated 6x6 posts to the concrete footings using the embedded anchors. Use a level to ensure posts are plumb and cut them to the desired height minus the thickness of your beam material. All posts should be level with each other.
- Crown Your Frame. Attach a ledger board to your house using lag bolts into the rim joist, ensuring proper flashing behind it. Install double 2x10 or 2x12 beams across the tops of your posts using galvanized carriage bolts. The beams should be level and properly spaced to support your joist layout.
- Create the Lattice. Install 2x8 or 2x10 joists 16 inches on center between the ledger board and outer beam. Use joist hangers at the ledger board and rest joists on top of the beam, securing with galvanized nails or screws. Add blocking between joists for additional stability.
- Lay the Living Surface. Start with a straight board along the house and work outward. Leave a 1/4 inch gap between boards for drainage and expansion. Use galvanized deck screws, driving two screws into each joist. Snap chalk lines to ensure straight cuts at the deck edge.
- Complete the Safety Rail. Install 4x4 railing posts at corners and every 6-8 feet along the deck perimeter. Cut posts to 36-42 inches above the deck surface as required by code. Install top and bottom rails, then add balusters spaced no more than 4 inches apart for safety.
- Seal in Protection. Sand any rough spots and clean the deck thoroughly. Apply a deck stain or sealant according to manufacturer instructions. This protects the wood from weather and extends the deck's life significantly.
