How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

Build a raised garden bed by constructing a rectangular frame from untreated lumber, positioning it in a sunny location, and filling it with quality soil mix.

  1. Find Your Sunniest Spot. Pick a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Check that the area is relatively level and has good drainage. Avoid low spots where water pools after rain. Make sure you can access all sides of the bed for planting and maintenance.
  2. Get Your Boards Ready. Use untreated cedar, redwood, or composite lumber. For a 4x8 foot bed, cut two pieces at 8 feet and two pieces at 4 feet. Cedar 2x10 boards work well for most vegetables, giving you 10 inches of soil depth. Avoid pressure-treated lumber as chemicals can leach into your soil.
  3. Clear and Level Ground. Clear the area of grass and weeds. You can lay down cardboard to suppress weeds, but this isn't required. Level the ground roughly with a rake. The surface doesn't need to be perfect since you can adjust the frame as you build.
  4. Screw the Frame Together. Connect the corners using 3-inch exterior wood screws or galvanized carriage bolts. Pre-drill holes to prevent splitting. For extra strength, use corner brackets on the inside. The long sides should overlap the short sides at the corners. Check that corners are square by measuring diagonally - both measurements should be equal.
  5. Level Everything Perfectly. Place your assembled frame in the chosen location. Use a level to check all sides. Adjust by digging out high spots or adding soil to low areas. The frame should sit firmly on the ground with no rocking or gaps.
  6. Create Smart Drainage. Line the bottom with hardware cloth if you have problems with burrowing pests. Add a 2-3 inch layer of coarse material like small stones, broken pottery, or wood chips. This improves drainage and prevents soil from becoming waterlogged.
  7. Load Quality Soil Mix. Use a mix of one-third compost, one-third peat moss or coconut coir, and one-third vermiculite or perlite. You can also buy pre-made raised bed soil mix. Fill to about 2 inches below the top rim. The soil will settle over time, so start with more than you think you need.
  8. Water and Wait. Give the soil a thorough watering to help it settle. Add more soil if needed to bring the level back up. Let the bed sit for a week before planting to allow everything to settle properly.
