How to Install a Paver Patio
Installing a paver patio involves excavating the area, creating a level base with gravel and sand, laying pavers in your desired pattern, and filling joints with sand.
- Mark and measure before breaking ground. Determine your patio size and shape, then mark the perimeter with spray paint or stakes and string. Check local utility locations by calling 811 before digging. Add 6 inches beyond your finished patio dimensions to account for edge restraints and working room.
- Dig to exact depth specifications. Dig out the marked area to a depth of 7-9 inches below your desired finished height. This accounts for 4-6 inches of gravel base, 1 inch of sand, and your paver thickness. Keep the excavated soil nearby if it's good quality - you can use it elsewhere in your yard.
- Lock in the perimeter edges. Place plastic or metal edge restraints around the perimeter of your excavated area. These prevent pavers from shifting outward over time. Secure them with spikes every 12-18 inches, making sure the top sits at your planned finished paver height.
- Build a solid drainage base. Spread 4-6 inches of crushed gravel or decomposed granite evenly across the excavated area. Compact it in 2-inch lifts using a plate compactor, making multiple passes until the surface feels solid and doesn't give when you walk on it. This base prevents settling and provides drainage.
- Create a perfectly flat bed. Spread 1 inch of coarse sand over the compacted gravel. Use screed boards or pipes as guides to create a perfectly level surface. Drag a straight board across the sand to smooth it, adding or removing sand as needed. Don't compact this sand layer.
- Set pavers with patience and precision. Start in one corner and work systematically across the area. Place each paver straight down - don't slide them, as this disturbs the sand bed. Maintain consistent gaps between pavers, typically 1/8 inch. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap pavers level with their neighbors.
- Trim edges clean and carefully. Measure and mark pavers that need cutting to fit along edges. Use a wet saw with a diamond blade for clean cuts, or score and break smaller pieces with a chisel and hammer. Always wear safety glasses and work gloves when cutting.
- Lock and seal all joints. Run the plate compactor over the entire paved surface to settle pavers into the sand bed. Sweep polymeric sand into all joints, making sure they're completely filled. Lightly mist the surface to activate the polymeric sand, which will harden and lock pavers in place.
