How to Install Landscape Lighting
Install landscape lighting by planning your layout, running low-voltage cable from a transformer, and connecting weatherproof fixtures at key points around your yard.
- Map Your Lighting Strategy. Walk your property at night with a flashlight to identify areas that need illumination. Mark locations for path lights, accent lights for trees or features, and security lighting near entrances. Draw a simple sketch showing fixture locations and cable routes. Plan to space path lights 6-10 feet apart for even coverage.
- Mount Your Power Hub. Select a transformer sized for your total wattage needs plus 20% extra capacity. Mount it on an exterior wall near a GFCI outlet, at least 12 inches off the ground. Keep it away from sprinkler zones and ensure easy access for maintenance. Connect the transformer to the outlet but leave it unplugged for now.
- Route Cable Underground. Dig a trench 6-8 inches deep from the transformer to your furthest fixture location. Use a trenching shovel or rent a small trencher for longer runs. Lay low-voltage landscape cable in the trench, leaving extra length at each fixture location. Avoid sharp turns and keep cable away from water sources.
- Position Each Light. Assemble each fixture according to manufacturer instructions. For path lights, push or screw the stake firmly into the ground. For accent lights, position them 2-3 feet from trees or features they'll illuminate. Ensure all fixtures are level and pointed in the right direction before making electrical connections.
- Seal All Electrical Joints. Strip cable ends and connect each fixture using waterproof wire nuts or the connector system provided with your fixtures. Most low-voltage fixtures use simple twist-on connectors. Test each connection by gently tugging the wires. Double-check that all connections are completely covered and sealed.
- Verify Every Light Works. Plug in the transformer and test each light. Walk the entire system to ensure all fixtures work properly. Adjust fixture angles to eliminate glare and focus light where needed. Set the transformer timer if included, typically for dusk-to-dawn operation or a specific schedule.
- Restore and Commission. Carefully backfill all trenches, avoiding damage to the cable. Tamp soil gently and restore any disturbed landscaping. Install any included shields or covers on the transformer. Program timer settings and test the system one final time during evening hours to verify proper operation.
