How to Paint Exterior Brick the Right Way

Paint exterior brick by thoroughly cleaning the surface, applying a high-quality primer designed for masonry, and using two coats of exterior acrylic paint with a roller and brush combination for best coverage.

  1. Strip the Surface Clean. Power wash the entire brick surface with a pressure washer set to 1500-2000 PSI. Work from top to bottom, holding the nozzle 12 inches from the wall. Remove all dirt, mildew, and loose mortar. For stubborn stains, scrub with a stiff brush and TSP cleaner. Let the brick dry completely for 24-48 hours before proceeding.
  2. Seal Every Joint First. Inspect all mortar joints for cracks or missing sections. Use a chisel and hammer to remove loose mortar, then mix fresh mortar according to package directions. Fill gaps with a pointing trowel, smoothing joints to match the existing profile. Allow repairs to cure for at least 24 hours.
  3. Prime for Perfect Adhesion. Use a high-quality acrylic masonry primer designed specifically for brick. Apply with a thick-nap roller (3/4 inch) to cover the textured surface, then back-brush with a 3-inch angled brush to work primer into all crevices and mortar lines. Don't skip this step - primer ensures proper adhesion and prevents the brick from absorbing too much paint.
  4. Lay the First Layer Down. Once the primer is dry (typically 4-6 hours), apply the first coat of exterior acrylic paint using the same roller and brush technique. Work in 4-foot sections, rolling paint on thick and immediately back-brushing to eliminate roller marks and ensure complete coverage of the textured surface.
  5. Build Lasting Color Coverage. Wait for the first coat to dry completely (6-8 hours). Apply the second coat using the same method, paying extra attention to areas where the brick texture might have absorbed more paint. This final coat provides durability and even color coverage.
