How to Stain a Deck for the First Time

Clean your deck thoroughly, sand rough spots, apply stain with a brush or roller in the direction of the wood grain, and allow 24-48 hours to dry completely.

Get the Weather Right. Pick a day with temperatures between 50-80°F and no rain expected for 48 hours. Avoid staining in direct sunlight or on very humid days. Early morning or late afternoon work best when the deck is in shade.
Clear the Deck. Remove all furniture, plants, and decorations from the deck. Sweep away leaves, dirt, and debris. Cover nearby plants and siding with plastic sheeting to protect them from stain splatter.
Wash Away Years of Grime. Use a deck cleaner or mix 1 cup of oxygen bleach with 1 gallon of warm water. Apply with a pump sprayer or mop, let sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose and let dry completely for 24-48 hours.
Smooth the Surface. Lightly sand any rough, splintered, or weathered boards with 80-120 grit sandpaper. Focus on high-traffic areas and railings. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth before proceeding.
Test Before Committing. Apply stain to a small, hidden section of decking to check the color and coverage. Let it dry completely to see the final result. This prevents surprises with the full application.
Paint with the Grain. Start with the railings and work your way down to the deck boards. Use a 4-inch brush for railings and a roller or pump sprayer for large surfaces. Always work in the direction of the wood grain. Apply thin, even coats rather than thick applications.
Avoid Visible Lap Marks. Stain 3-4 deck boards at a time, maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks. If using a roller, back-brush immediately with a brush to work stain into the wood grain and eliminate roller marks.
Finish Strong and Patient. Clean brushes and rollers immediately with the appropriate solvent. Keep foot traffic off the deck for at least 24 hours, or longer if the weather is cool or humid. Full cure takes 72 hours before replacing furniture.
