How to Install a Smart Lock on Your Front Door

Installing a smart lock typically takes 30-60 minutes and involves removing your old deadbolt, installing the new smart lock mechanism, and connecting it to your smartphone app for keyless entry.

  1. Know Your Door First. Measure your door thickness and backset distance (usually 2⅜ inches or 2¾ inches from door edge to center of hole). Check if your existing deadbolt hole is standard 2⅛ inch diameter. Pick a smart lock compatible with your door specs and preferred features like keypad, fingerprint, or app-only access.
  2. Strip the Old System. Start from inside your home. Unscrew the two screws holding the interior thumb turn assembly. Remove the interior and exterior pieces. Unscrew the latch mechanism from the door edge and pull it out of the hole. Keep the strike plate on the door frame unless your new lock requires a different size.
  3. Seat the Latch Flush. Insert the new latch into the door hole with the beveled edge facing the direction the door closes. The latch should sit flush with the door edge. Secure it with the provided screws. Make sure the latch retracts and extends smoothly when you turn the tailpiece by hand.
  4. Mount the Outside Panel. Thread the cable from the exterior keypad or handle through the door hole. Position the exterior assembly so the keypad or handle sits level and the mounting holes align. From inside, insert the long mounting screws through the interior mounting plate and into the exterior assembly.
  5. Wire and Secure Inside. Connect the cable from the exterior to the interior control unit following the color-coded wiring diagram. Install batteries in the interior unit. Mount the interior assembly to the door, ensuring the tailpiece engages properly with the latch mechanism. Tighten the mounting screws firmly but don't overtighten.
  6. Activate Remote Access. Download the manufacturer's app and create an account. Follow the in-app setup process to connect the lock to your WiFi network. Program your access codes, fingerprints, or other authentication methods. Test the lock multiple times from both inside and outside to ensure proper operation before relying on it.
