How to Build a Mudroom Bench with Storage

Build a sturdy mudroom bench with storage by constructing a simple frame, adding a hinged top, and installing interior dividers for shoes and gear.

  1. Measure Before You Build. Measure your mudroom space and decide on bench size. A standard mudroom bench is 18 inches deep, 16-18 inches high, and as long as your space allows. Plan for the storage compartment to be about 14 inches deep to accommodate most shoes and boots.
  2. Get All Pieces Cut. Cut two side panels (18x16 inches), one back panel (length x 16 inches), one bottom panel (length x 18 inches), and one top panel (length x 18 inches). If adding dividers, cut interior panels to fit your planned compartments. Use 3/4-inch plywood or pine boards for durability.
  3. Create the Box Structure. Attach the side panels to the back panel using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure everything is square by measuring diagonals. Secure the bottom panel between the side and back pieces, creating a three-sided box that will hold your storage items.
  4. Divide Interior Space. Install vertical dividers inside the storage compartment to create separate sections for different family members or types of items. Secure these with small brackets or by notching them into the bottom panel. Space them evenly based on your family's needs.
  5. Hang the Hinged Top. Attach piano hinges to the back edge of the top panel and the top edge of the back panel. Piano hinges distribute weight evenly and handle daily use better than regular hinges. Position hinges so the top opens smoothly without hitting the wall.
  6. Sand, Seal, and Cushion. Sand all surfaces smooth and apply your chosen finish - paint, stain, or clear sealant. Once dry, add a cushion to the top by attaching foam padding and covering with durable fabric. Secure the fabric underneath with a staple gun.
  7. Anchor to Wall Studs. Secure the bench to wall studs using heavy-duty brackets or by screwing through the back panel. This prevents tipping when someone sits on the edge and adds stability when the storage compartment is loaded with heavy boots.
