How to Install Wainscoting
Install wainscoting by measuring and marking your wall height, cutting panels to fit, securing a chair rail at the top, and attaching panels with construction adhesive and finishing nails.
- Map Your Wall First. Decide on your wainscoting height, typically 32-36 inches from the floor. Mark this height around the room with a level and pencil. Measure each wall section to calculate how many panels you need. Plan your layout so panels are evenly spaced, avoiding narrow slivers at corners.
- Anchor the Top Line. Cut your chair rail molding to fit each wall, mitering corners at 45-degree angles. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs, then attach the chair rail at your marked height using 2.5-inch finishing nails driven into studs. Check that it's level as you go.
- Size Every Panel Precisely. Measure the distance from your baseboard to the bottom edge of the chair rail. Cut your wainscoting panels to this height using a circular saw or miter saw. If using beadboard, cut individual boards. For panel systems, cut each panel section to fit your layout.
- Secure Panels Wall-Wide. Apply construction adhesive to the back of each panel in a zigzag pattern. Press panels firmly against the wall, starting at one corner. Use a level to ensure they're plumb. Secure with 1.5-inch finishing nails every 16 inches along the edges and into studs where possible.
- Polish and Paint. Install baseboard molding at the bottom if you removed it, and add any vertical trim pieces between panels if desired. Fill all nail holes with wood filler, let dry, then sand smooth. Prime and paint the entire wainscoting system for a professional finish.
