How to Build Modular Shop Wall Storage

Storage in a workshop is rarely a one-and-done project; your tool collection evolves, and so should your walls. A modular French cleat system provides the ultimate versatility, allowing you to rearrange, add, or remove tool holders as your inventory grows without drilling new holes into your wall studs every time you move a shelf. Building this system requires precision during the initial cleat installation, but the payoff is a clean, professional shop environment. Once the main rails are leveled and secured, you are free to design custom racks, cubbies, and hooks that lock securely into place, effectively turning your entire wall into a customizable pegboard that can handle the weight of heavy cordless tools and clamps.

  1. Find Every Stud First. Locate every wall stud in your work area using a reliable stud finder and mark them clearly with a vertical line. Ensure your wall is clear of obstructions like electrical outlets or existing pipework before planning your layout.
  2. Cut the Cleat Profiles. Rip a 3/4-inch sheet of birch plywood into 4-inch wide strips using a table saw. Set your blade at a 45-degree angle and rip the strips down the center to create the matching male and female cleat profiles.
  3. Secure Rails to Studs. Screw the female cleats (angled side facing up and out) directly into the wall studs using 3-inch deck screws. Space the rails approximately 12 to 16 inches apart vertically to provide ample room for various holder sizes.
  4. Build Custom Holders. Construct your tool-specific holders by attaching a matching male cleat (angled side facing down) to the back of a plywood backer board. Ensure the angle of the male cleat is tight against the backer so the weight of the tool pulls the holder firmly against the wall.
  5. Seal and Smooth. Lightly sand all edges to prevent splinters and apply a coat of polyurethane or shop-grade paint to protect the wood from humidity and grease. This also helps the cleats slide more smoothly when you rearrange them.
  6. Load Your Wall System. Begin placing your tool holders onto the rails and distribute the weight evenly across the wall. Start with your heaviest tools at the bottom and move lighter items to the upper rows.
