How to Install Under-Bed Storage Drawers
Floorboards beneath a bed often turn into a graveyard for dust bunnies and lost socks, yet they represent some of the most valuable, underutilized square footage in a home. Installing under-bed storage drawers is the most effective way to reclaim this space, turning a standard bed frame into a high-capacity storage solution that keeps clutter tucked away but easily accessible. Done well, this project involves creating or buying low-profile containers that glide smoothly on your specific flooring type. The secret lies in measuring your clearance height precisely and choosing casters that handle the weight of your items without scuffing your floors. Once installed, your bedroom will feel instantly larger, cleaner, and significantly more organized.
- Measure Twice, Build Once. Measure the distance from the floor to the lowest point of your bed frame or side rails. Subtract one inch from this number to ensure your drawers won't scrape or get stuck when the bed frame shifts slightly.
- Build or Buy Your Boxes. Purchase pre-made wooden crates or build simple boxes using 1x8 pine boards. Ensure the final height is at least an inch shorter than your measured clearance.
- Mount Wheels for Smooth Glide. Attach four swivel casters to the bottom corners of each box using wood screws. Make sure the casters are mounted to a solid base, like a piece of plywood, rather than thin decorative slats.
- Divide for Organization. Install thin plywood or heavy-duty cardboard dividers inside the drawers to keep contents from shifting. Secure them with small L-brackets or simple cleats glued to the sides.
- Add Easy-Grab Handles. Center a drawer pull on the front face of each box. Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screws to prevent the wood from splitting as you tighten them down.
- Perfect Your Slide. Slide the drawers under the bed and check for any sticking points. Adjust caster height with shims if one corner drags or the drawer sits at an angle.
