How to Properly Store Seasonal Rugs

Rugs are the anchor of a room's design, but they are also magnets for dust, moisture, and pests when left to sit in a dark corner. Storing seasonal rugs incorrectly often leads to permanent creasing, mildew growth, or moth damage that ruins expensive natural fibers. A well-stored rug should come out of hibernation exactly as it went in—clean, flat, and smelling fresh. The secret to longevity lies in the preparation. By removing deep-seated soil and ensuring the rug is completely moisture-free before rolling, you eliminate the two biggest threats to textile preservation. Follow these steps to ensure your rugs remain in rotation for years to come rather than falling victim to long-term storage mistakes.

  1. Sanitize and Dry Thoroughly. Vacuum the rug thoroughly on both sides to remove grit and debris. If the rug is machine washable, follow the manufacturer's care label; otherwise, spot clean any stains with mild soap and water, ensuring the fibers are 100% dry before proceeding.
  2. Choose Your Rug's Spine. Purchase a thick cardboard shipping tube or a heavy-duty PVC pipe slightly longer than the width of your rug. This core prevents the rug from developing deep, permanent creases that occur when a rug is folded.
  3. Roll Tight, Stay Straight. Lay the rug face down and place the tube at one end. Begin rolling tightly, keeping the edges aligned so the rug doesn't become lopsided as you go.
  4. Breathe, Don't Suffocate. Wrap the rolled rug in a breathable material like a cotton sheet or a large canvas drop cloth. Secure the wrap with cotton twill tape or ribbon, avoiding plastic bags that trap condensation.
  5. Lift It Up and Away. Place the wrapped rug on a high shelf or mount it on wall brackets to keep it away from ground moisture. Ensure the storage space is cool, dry, and dark to prevent fading.
  6. Watch and Protect Quarterly. Check your storage area once every few months to ensure no leaks or pests have compromised the space. If you notice any humidity, place a moisture-absorbing canister nearby.
