How to Measure and Install Kitchen Cabinet Hardware
Precision is the difference between a high-end kitchen finish and a wobbly, misaligned mess. Hardware installation feels like a permanent commitment because it is—once you drill through those doors and drawer fronts, there is no turning back. Taking the extra time to measure twice and create a physical template will save you from the heartbreak of crooked pulls or mismatched heights. Good hardware installation is about consistency above all else. Your eyes will naturally track the line of handles across a run of cabinets, making even a quarter-inch variance painfully obvious. By focusing on the center-to-center distance of your handles and establishing a reliable reference point from the edge of your stiles, you ensure that every door looks exactly like its neighbor.
- Measure Center-to-Center Distance. Identify the center-to-center measurement of your pulls, which is the distance between the two screw holes. Measure this yourself with a caliper rather than trusting the manufacturer's nominal size, as small variations can lead to binding.
- Lock Your Template Settings. Set your adjustable cabinet hardware jig to the specific center-to-center distance required. If you do not have an adjustable jig, create one using a scrap piece of wood that marks your desired offset from the door edges.
- Mark Holes with Precision. Hold the jig against the corner of the cabinet door or drawer front and mark your holes with a sharp, pointed scribe or a thin-tipped pencil. Ensure the jig is perfectly square to the frame before marking.
- Drill Without Blowout. Use a drill bit sized specifically for the screws provided with your hardware. Drill straight through the face of the door or drawer while holding a scrap block of wood firmly against the backside of the hole exit.
- Secure Each Pull Evenly. Insert the machine screws from the back of the door or drawer through the holes you just drilled. Align the pull with the screws and tighten them until they are snug.
- Verify Perfect Alignment. Check that all pulls are level and that no hardware binds when opening the cabinet doors. Adjust the tension on the mounting screws if a pull feels loose or slightly askew.
