How to Install Pull-Out Drawers in Deep Kitchen Cabinets
Deep kitchen cabinets are often black holes where cookware goes to be forgotten. Installing pull-out drawers transforms these cavernous voids into accessible, functional storage that brings the back of the shelf to you. By utilizing the full depth of the cabinet, you eliminate the need to crawl on the floor to find a lid or a roasting pan. Done well, this project is a lesson in precision and patience. The key is ensuring your slides are perfectly level and parallel. If the spacing is off by even an eighth of an inch, the drawer will bind or slide open on its own. Take your time during the layout phase, and you will end up with a professional-grade upgrade that makes your kitchen work for you, not the other way around.
- Empty and Measure Twice. Empty the cabinet completely and measure the interior width, height, and depth. Ensure your measurements account for the space occupied by door hinges or existing shelf supports.
- Build Your Mounting Base. If your cabinet interior walls are recessed behind the face frame, screw wood cleats to the sides to create a flush mounting surface. Use a level to ensure the cleats are perfectly horizontal.
- Mark Every Mounting Point. Mark the exact vertical location for your drawer slides on the side walls or cleats. Use a framing square to draw a level line that runs from the front of the cabinet to the back.
- Screw Down the Slides. Align the cabinet-side slides with your pencil lines and secure them with screws. Start with the center screw, check for level, then secure the remaining holes.
- Build Your Drawer Box. Build your drawer box according to the kit instructions, ensuring it is perfectly square. Attach the drawer-side slides to the box, ensuring they sit flush against the bottom edge.
- Find the Perfect Glide. Insert the drawer box into the cabinet, engaging the slides. Test the movement; if it binds, loosen the mounting screws slightly and shift the slide to find the 'sweet spot' before tightening.
