How to Install Under-Cabinet Task Lighting

When your overhead light is behind you, your body casts a shadow exactly where you need to see, making prep work feel like a guessing game. Adding task lighting isn't just about aesthetics; it is about creating a workspace that is safe, clear, and functional for daily cooking tasks. Installing under-cabinet lighting is a high-impact project that provides immediate utility. Whether you choose plug-in strips or hardwired fixtures, the goal is the same: wash the counter in light without blinding yourself with glare. 1. Map Your Light Path. Measure the length of the underside of your upper cabinets. Plan to position the lights toward the front edge of the cabinet base, which ensures the light hits the entire counter surface rather than just the backsplash.
2. Pick Your Power Method. Decide between plug-in fixtures that use an existing outlet or hardwired units that connect to your home's electrical system. If you aren't comfortable working with junction boxes, stick to plug-in LED systems.
