How to Paint a Bedroom Wall Like a Pro
Painting a bedroom wall is the most effective way to completely reset the energy of your space without the cost of a major renovation. The secret to a finish that looks like it was done by a professional isn't just the paint quality; it is the patience you invest before the brush ever touches the drywall. A wall painted well has smooth, consistent color, sharp edges where it meets the trim, and no visible lap marks or texture buildup. Preparation represents about seventy percent of the work. If you skip cleaning the dust or filling the small nicks in the plaster, the paint will highlight every imperfection rather than hiding them. Approach this project as a process of refinement, and you will end up with a room that feels polished and intentionally designed.
- Move furniture and remove covers. Move all furniture to the center of the room and cover it with plastic sheeting. Remove electrical outlet covers and switch plates, placing the screws inside the covers so they don't get lost.
- Wipe walls clean first. Wipe down the walls with a mixture of water and a mild degreaser to remove dust, cobwebs, and oils. Allow the walls to dry completely before proceeding to ensure proper paint adhesion.
- Fill and sand smooth. Fill nail holes or dents with a lightweight spackle using a putty knife. Once dry, sand the spots lightly with a fine-grit sanding sponge until perfectly flush with the wall.
- Tape edges and cut in. Apply painter's tape along the baseboards, window casings, and door frames. Use a high-quality angled sash brush to cut in a 2-inch border around the perimeter of the wall and around all outlets.
- Roll with a wet edge. Pour paint into a tray and load your roller evenly. Apply paint in a 'W' or 'M' pattern to distribute it, then fill in the gaps with vertical strokes to achieve a uniform finish.
- Apply second coat and cleanup. Wait for the first coat to dry according to the can's instructions before applying a second coat. Carefully remove the tape, reinstall the covers, and clean your brushes immediately with soap and water.
