How to Fix a Washing Machine That Won't Drain
A washing machine that won't drain is usually caused by a clogged drain hose, blocked pump filter, or faulty drain pump that can be fixed by clearing blockages or replacing the pump.
- Kill the Power First. Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet and turn off the water supply valves behind the machine. This prevents any accidents while you work and stops water from continuing to fill the tub.
- Empty the Tub. Bail out as much water as possible using a bucket or large cup. For remaining water, place towels around the base of the machine and carefully tip it slightly forward to drain water into a shallow pan. You can also use the emergency drain hose if your machine has one.
- Hunt for Blockages. Disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe or utility sink. Look inside the hose for visible blockages like lint, coins, or small clothing items. Run water through the hose to check if it flows freely. If clogged, use a plumbing snake or straightened coat hanger to remove debris.
- Check Home Plumbing. Pour water directly into the standpipe or utility sink to see if it drains properly. If water backs up, the problem is with your home's plumbing, not the washing machine. Clear this blockage with a plumbing snake or call a plumber.
- Scrub the Filter Clean. Locate the pump filter access panel at the bottom front of the machine. Place towels on the floor and slowly unscrew the filter cap, allowing trapped water to drain out. Remove any lint, coins, hair ties, or debris from the filter. Rinse the filter under hot water and scrub with an old toothbrush if needed.
- Test Pump Operation. With the filter removed, shine a flashlight into the pump housing to look for obstructions. Remove any visible debris with needle-nose pliers. Try spinning the pump impeller by hand - it should turn freely. If it's stuck or makes grinding noises, the pump may need replacement.
- Verify the Switch Works. A faulty lid switch can prevent the spin cycle that drains water. With the machine plugged in, press the lid switch down manually while starting a spin cycle. If the machine doesn't start spinning, the switch needs replacement.
- Confirm Full Drainage. Reinstall the pump filter, reconnect the drain hose, and restore power and water supply. Run a small test load or just a spin cycle to verify the machine drains properly. Check around the base for any leaks during operation.
