How to Fix a Washing Machine That Won't Spin

A washing machine that won't spin is usually caused by an unbalanced load, faulty lid switch, worn drive belt, or clogged drain pump that you can troubleshoot and often repair yourself.

  1. Balance the Drum First. Open the lid and redistribute wet clothes evenly around the drum. Heavy items like comforters or multiple towels can clump together on one side, preventing the spin cycle from starting. Remove some items if the load is too heavy, then restart the spin cycle.
  2. Listen for the Click. Press down firmly on the lid switch mechanism (usually a small plastic piece where the lid closes). You should hear a clicking sound. If the switch feels loose or doesn't click, it's likely faulty and needs replacement. This safety feature prevents spinning when the lid is open.
  3. Check the Belt System. Unplug the machine and remove the back or front panel (depending on your model). Look for a rubber belt connecting the motor to the drum. If it's broken, stretched, or has slipped off the pulleys, replace it with an exact match from your manufacturer. A loose belt will prevent the drum from spinning.
  4. Unclog the Filter. Locate the drain pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front). Place towels on the floor and slowly unscrew the filter. Remove lint, coins, or debris that might be blocking water drainage. If water can't drain properly, the machine won't enter the spin cycle.
  5. Replace the Coupling. For top-loading machines, examine the motor coupling that connects the motor to the transmission. This plastic piece often breaks from normal wear. If broken, you'll see white plastic pieces in the bottom of the tub. Replace with a new coupling specific to your model.
  6. Identify Motor Failure. If all else fails, the drive motor itself may be faulty. Listen for humming sounds when the spin cycle should start. A humming motor that doesn't turn usually indicates internal motor failure requiring professional replacement or a decision to replace the entire machine.
