How to Replace a Ceiling Light Fixture

Lighting is the single most effective way to change the personality of a bedroom. Replacing an outdated, builder-grade flush mount with something that fits your style is a high-impact project that takes less than an hour but completely transforms how the room feels when you flip the switch at night. Done well, the fixture will sit perfectly flush against the ceiling without any gaps, and the wiring will be neatly tucked away inside the junction box. Safety is the only non-negotiable part of this process; treating the electrical components with respect and ensuring your connections are solid will keep your home bright and hazard-free for years to come.

  1. Kill the Power First. Go to your main electrical panel and switch off the breaker controlling the bedroom light. Verify the power is off by flipping the wall switch; if the light doesn't turn on, you are clear to proceed.
  2. Support the Weight. Unscrew the decorative nuts or the glass shade to reveal the internal mounting hardware. Carefully support the weight of the old fixture while you unscrew the mounting screws from the junction box.
  3. Separate All Connections. Loosen the wire nuts connecting your house wires to the fixture wires. Untwist the connections and separate the fixture from the ceiling, leaving the electrical box exposed.
  4. Mount the Bracket Level. Screw the provided mounting bracket or crossbar into the junction box using the provided machine screws. Ensure the bracket is level and pulled tight against the ceiling surface.
  5. Match Colors, Twist Tight. Connect the house wires to the fixture wires by matching colors: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and bare copper or green to the green grounding screw. Secure each connection with a wire nut, twisting them clockwise until tight.
  6. Lock It Flush. Tuck the wires carefully into the junction box and align the new canopy with the mounting bracket studs. Tighten the decorative cap nuts to lock the fixture into place against the ceiling.
