How to Patch a Hole in Drywall

Small holes can be patched with mesh and joint compound, while larger holes need a drywall patch cut to fit the opening.

  1. Know Your Hole First. Measure the hole to determine your repair method. Holes smaller than a quarter need only mesh tape and compound. Holes up to 3 inches can use a self-adhesive mesh patch. Anything larger requires cutting a new piece of drywall.
  2. Clear Away the Mess. Remove any loose drywall paper or crumbling edges around the hole. Use a utility knife to cut away any torn paper, creating clean edges. This gives your patch material something solid to adhere to.
  3. Tape It Up Quick. For nail holes or small damage, place self-adhesive mesh tape over the hole. Press firmly to ensure good contact with the wall surface. The mesh should extend at least an inch beyond the hole in all directions.
  4. Cut to Fit Perfectly. For holes larger than 3 inches, cut a square piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole. Trace around this piece on the wall, then cut along your lines with a drywall saw. Test fit the patch and trim as needed for a snug fit.
  5. Build Your Foundation. Large patches need support behind them. Cut a piece of wood or metal mesh larger than the hole and slide it behind the drywall. Secure it with drywall screws, making sure the screw heads sit slightly below the surface.
  6. Blend It Seamlessly. Using a putty knife, spread joint compound over the patch, feathering the edges outward to blend with the surrounding wall. Apply thin, even coats rather than one thick layer. Let each coat dry completely before adding the next.
  7. Smooth and Invisible. Once dry, sand the area smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. Apply a second coat of compound, extending it further from the patch. Sand again when dry. Repeat until the patch is flush and invisible.
  8. Vanish Into the Wall. Apply primer to the patched area to seal the joint compound. Once dry, paint the area to match the surrounding wall. You may need multiple thin coats to achieve proper coverage and color match.
