How to Fix a Flickering Light Fixture
Most flickering lights are caused by loose bulbs, faulty bulbs, or loose wire connections that can be fixed by tightening connections and replacing components.
- Rule Out the Bulb First. Switch off the light and let the bulb cool for 10 minutes. Remove the bulb and check if it's loose by screwing it back in firmly. If the bulb looks dark around the base or has a broken filament, replace it with a new one of the same wattage. Turn the power back on to test.
- Tighten Every Wire. Turn off the circuit breaker for that light. Remove the switch cover plate with a screwdriver and pull the switch out gently. Look for loose wire connections on the switch terminals. Tighten any loose screws holding the wires. If the switch feels loose or wobbly when you flip it, replace the entire switch.
- Find the Burned Wires. With power still off, remove the light fixture cover or shade. Look inside the electrical box for loose wire nuts or exposed wire connections. Twist wire nuts clockwise to tighten them. If you see black or burn marks around connections, those wires need to be cut back and reconnected with new wire nuts.
- Check Breaker Engagement. Go to your electrical panel and locate the breaker for the flickering light. Turn it completely off, then back on with a firm push. A breaker that doesn't click solidly into place or feels loose may be failing and should be replaced by an electrician.
- Confirm the Problem Solved. Turn the power back on and test the light for several minutes. Flip the switch on and off multiple times. If the light still flickers, or if you found burned connections or multiple loose wires, the problem likely involves the home's wiring and requires professional help.
