How to Repair Cracked Stucco on Exterior Walls
Clean out loose debris from the crack, apply mesh tape if needed, fill with stucco patch compound in thin layers, then texture and paint to match the surrounding wall.
- Clear Away Loose Material. Use a putty knife or wire brush to remove any loose stucco, dirt, or debris from the crack. For larger cracks, you may need to widen them slightly with a chisel to create clean edges. Brush away all dust and rinse the area with water, allowing it to dry completely before proceeding.
- Tape Down the Gap. For cracks wider than 1/8 inch, apply self-adhesive mesh tape over the crack. Press it firmly into place, ensuring it lies flat against the wall surface. This reinforcement prevents the crack from reopening as the wall settles over time.
- Fill the Crack First. Mix stucco patch compound according to package directions until it reaches a thick, peanut butter consistency. Using a putty knife or trowel, apply a thin layer over the crack, pressing firmly to fill it completely. Keep this first coat slightly below the surrounding surface level.
- Level It Flush. Once the first coat is firm but not completely dry, apply a second coat to bring the repair level with the surrounding stucco. Use long, smooth strokes with your trowel to blend the edges into the existing surface. Allow this coat to set until slightly firm.
- Match the Wall Texture. Before the stucco fully hardens, recreate the existing wall texture using appropriate tools. For smooth finishes, use a trowel in circular motions. For rough textures, dab with a sponge or brush. Match the pattern and depth of the surrounding area as closely as possible.
- Cure, Then Prime. Let the repaired area cure for at least 24-48 hours, keeping it slightly damp by misting with water if weather is very hot or dry. Once fully cured, apply a coat of exterior primer to seal the new stucco and prepare it for paint.
- Paint It Seamless. Paint the repaired area with exterior paint that matches your existing stucco color. Apply thin, even coats and feather the edges to blend with the surrounding painted surface. You may need two coats for complete coverage and color matching.
