How to Patch Missing Roof Shingles
Roofing is the primary barrier between your family and the elements, and even a single missing shingle creates a vulnerable entry point for water damage. When the felt underlayment is left exposed, it slowly degrades, leading to rot in the roof deck and eventually interior leaks. Fixing this promptly is the difference between a simple ten-minute repair and an expensive structural restoration. Done well, a roof patch should be seamless, blending into the surrounding layout while maintaining the necessary overlap required for water shedding. You aren't just nailing down a piece of asphalt; you are restoring the integrity of your home's armor. Approach this work with patience, ensuring you work from the top down to maintain the correct shingle sequence.
- Inspect and Clear the Deck. Remove any loose asphalt granules, old nails, or debris from the area where the shingle was lost. Inspect the underlayment for tears, and if it is damaged, patch it with a piece of roofing felt secured with asphalt cement.
- Lift and Extract Old Nails. Gently lift the edges of the shingles directly above the missing spot using a flat pry bar. Carefully pull out any remaining old nails from the roof deck to create a smooth surface.
- Size the Replacement Shingle. Measure the space left by the missing shingle and cut a new shingle to fit, typically taking about a quarter-inch off the sides to ensure it slides in easily. Use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge for a clean cut.
- Tuck Into the Course. Slide the new shingle into the open slot, tucking the top edge well beneath the row above. Ensure the bottom edge aligns perfectly with the adjacent shingles in the same course.
- Nail Four Points Flush. Lift the corners of the overlying shingles and drive four roofing nails into the top portion of the new shingle. Position the nails so they are covered by the shingles above but still catch the solid roof deck.
- Seal with Roofing Cement. Apply a small dab of roofing cement under the corners of the new shingle and any lifted overlying shingles. Press the shingles down firmly to ensure they bond with the adhesive strip.
