How to Replace Damaged Roof Shingles
Roofing is the primary line of defense for your home, and a single damaged or missing shingle can quickly become an entry point for water. When you see curled, cracked, or missing shingles after a storm, addressing them promptly prevents rot, mold, and expensive structural damage to your roof deck. Performing this repair is a straightforward process, provided you prioritize safety and work methodically. You are essentially unzipping the layers of the roof to swap out the compromised piece. Done well, the new shingle will lock perfectly into the existing pattern, restoring the weatherproofing seal and keeping your home dry for years to come.
- Break the adhesive seal. Gently lift the edges of the shingles immediately above the damaged one to locate the nails holding them down. Use a flat pry bar to carefully break the factory adhesive seal without tearing the asphalt mat.
- Pull nails and extract shingle. Slide your pry bar under the damaged shingle to lift it, then locate and pull the nails securing it to the roof deck. Once the nails are out, pull the damaged shingle straight out from the course.
- Check deck for damage. Inspect the exposed roof felt or underlayment for tears or punctures. If you find any damage, apply a small dab of roofing cement to patch the hole before proceeding.
- Trim to perfect fit. If your replacement shingle is a standard three-tab variety, trim the edges slightly so it slides into the slot without binding. Ensure it matches the width and height of the surrounding shingles.
- Slide and align precisely. Slide the new shingle into the exact position of the old one, ensuring the top edge is tucked fully under the row above. Align the bottom tabs with the existing pattern.
- Nail and seal tight. Drive four galvanized roofing nails into the top portion of the new shingle, ensuring they penetrate the roof deck. Apply a small amount of asphalt roof cement under the tabs of the new shingle and the row above to ensure they adhere and seal correctly.
