Maintaining Your Central AC Filter: Frequency and Best Practices

Airflow is the lifeblood of your central heating and cooling system. When a filter becomes clogged, your blower motor works significantly harder to pull air through the system, which not only drives up your monthly utility costs but can also lead to premature motor failure or frozen evaporator coils. Treating the filter as a routine maintenance item rather than an afterthought is the single most effective way to extend the lifespan of your unit. Establishing a consistent rhythm for this chore keeps your indoor air quality high and your system operating within its design specifications. While the industry standard suggests a three-month interval, homes with pets, smokers, or high dust levels often require monthly attention. A well-maintained filter is the difference between a system that hums along efficiently and one that struggles to keep up with the summer heat.

  1. Find Your Filter First. Find the filter housing, usually located where the return duct meets the air handler unit or behind a return air grille in a wall or ceiling. Unlatch the door or remove the grille cover to access the filter compartment.
  2. Check Filter Saturation. Slide the filter out and inspect it against a bright light source. If you cannot see light clearly through the mesh, or if the material looks grey and matted, it is time for a change.
  3. Match Specs Exactly. Read the dimensions printed on the edge of the old filter to ensure you purchase the correct replacement. Note the airflow direction arrow on the side of the filter frame.
  4. Dispose Properly. If using a reusable electrostatic filter, wash it with a garden hose or in a utility sink using mild detergent and let it dry completely. If using a disposable pleated filter, discard the old one in your household trash.
  5. Arrow Points In. Slide the new filter into the slot, paying close attention to the arrow pointing in the direction of the airflow toward the furnace or blower. Ensure the fit is snug so no air can bypass the filter edges.
  6. Set Three-Month Reminder. Switch the power back on and set a reminder on your phone or calendar for 90 days out. Record the date and filter size in a dedicated maintenance log or your phone's notes app.
