How to Fill Concrete Cracks Before Epoxy Coating

Concrete serves as the bedrock of your garage, but over time, shifts in the ground or temperature fluctuations inevitably lead to cracks. Ignoring these fractures is the fastest way to ruin an expensive epoxy project, as the coating will eventually pull away or bubble right where the surface failed. A solid floor starts with a solid foundation, and sealing these gaps properly is the difference between a professional finish and a peeling mess. Achieving a seamless floor is less about the epoxy itself and more about how you prepare the substrate. When you fill cracks correctly, you create a monolithic surface that can withstand vehicle weight and chemical spills. Do not rush this phase; if the filler isn't level and fully cured, the epoxy will telegraph every mistake, making your hard work look amateur from the moment you pull your car back in.

  1. Grind the Crack Wide Open. Use an angle grinder with a diamond blade to open the crack into a clean 'V' shape, about 1/4 inch wide. Vacuum out all loose debris, dust, and loose concrete bits to ensure the filler has a raw surface to grip.
  2. Dissolve Away Contaminants. Wipe out the newly widened crack with a rag soaked in acetone. This removes any lingering oil or grease that would prevent the filler from bonding properly.
  3. Blend the Two-Part Epoxy. Combine your two-part epoxy crack filler according to the manufacturer's specific ratio on a mixing board. Mix only what you can apply within 15 minutes to avoid premature hardening in the tray.
  4. Force Filler Into the Fissure. Force the epoxy into the crack using a metal putty knife, pressing down firmly to eliminate air pockets. Overfill the crack slightly so it sits just above the surrounding concrete surface.
  5. Scrape Flush With Concrete. While the epoxy is still tacky, use a wider trowel or a flat putty knife to scrape the excess filler flush with the concrete. Ensure there are no high spots that will show through the thin epoxy coating.
  6. Sand to Seamless Perfection. Allow the filler to cure for the manufacturer's recommended time, usually 12 to 24 hours. Once fully hard, sand the filled areas with 80-grit sandpaper until perfectly smooth.
