How to Install Wall-Mounted Storage Tracks for Garage Tools

Garage walls are often wasted space that could easily hold your entire collection of long-handled tools and equipment. When you install wall-mounted tracks, you move gear off the floor and into a systematic layout, which protects your equipment from moisture and clutter. Getting this done well means finding the studs behind your drywall. If you skip the studs and rely on hollow-wall anchors, your rack will pull away from the wall the moment you hang a heavy shovel or rake. Take the extra five minutes to locate the wood frame, and you will have a rock-solid mounting point that lasts for decades.

1. Find the Studs First. Use a stud finder to identify the vertical wood supports behind your drywall. Once located, mark the center of each stud clearly with a pencil.
2. Get Perfectly Level. Hold your track against the wall at your desired height and place a level on top of it. Adjust until the bubble is centered, then mark the screw holes onto the wall at the stud locations.
3. Prevent Wood Splits. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the shank of your mounting screws to drill into the marked stud locations. This prevents the wood studs from splitting during installation.
4. Secure the Track. Align the track with your pilot holes and drive the mounting screws through the track into the studs. Tighten them firmly, but avoid overtightening, which can strip the wood or crack the track material.
5. Cap the Ends. Most track kits include decorative or safety end caps that snap onto the ends of the rail. Attach these once the track is fully secured to the wall.
6. Arrange and Distribute. Slide your hooks or hangers into the track rail and arrange them to fit your specific tool shapes. Balance the weight across multiple studs to keep the load distributed evenly.
