How to Fix a Loose Electrical Outlet
• Outlets that wiggle or recede into the wall are more than an annoyance; they are a sign that the connection between the device and the electrical box has failed. In a kitchen, where you are constantly plugging and unplugging appliances, this constant mechanical stress leads to loose hardware. A loose outlet puts undue strain on your wire connections, which can lead to arcing or heat buildup over time. Fixing this is a straightforward repair that relies on shimming the outlet so it sits flush against the backsplash. When done well, the outlet feels rock-solid to the touch and the faceplate snaps on without gaps. You aren't just making it look better; you are ensuring your kitchen electrical system stays safe and reliable for years to come.
- Kill the Power First. Head to your main electrical panel and turn off the breaker feeding the kitchen. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the outlet to confirm there is zero current before proceeding.
- Unscrew and Set Aside. Unscrew the faceplate using a standard flathead screwdriver. Set the screws and plate aside in a secure spot so they don't get lost.
- Expose the Gap. Unscrew the two mounting screws holding the outlet to the electrical box. Pull the outlet out just enough to see the gap between the box and the wall surface.
- Shim the Box. Slide plastic electrical box spacers or shims onto the mounting screws. These spacers bridge the distance between the recessed electrical box and the finished backsplash tile.
- Tighten Firmly. Push the outlet back into place, ensuring the wires fold neatly behind it. Tighten the mounting screws until the outlet housing is firmly against the tile wall.
- Restore and Test. Place the faceplate back over the outlet and drive the screws in until they are snug. Restore power at the breaker panel and test the outlet.
