Repair a Scratched or Dented Stovetop

Stovetops take a beating. A dropped pot, a careless pan slide, or years of normal cooking leave marks that bug you every time you cook. The good news: most scratches and shallow dents are cosmetic and don't affect how your stove works. The better news: depending on your stove type, you can often fix them without calling a repair person or replacing the whole unit. Glass cooktops respond well to polishing compounds and can look almost new. Cast iron coil elements and gas burner grates can be replaced affordably. The real decision is whether the damage is purely visual—in which case it's optional—or whether it's affecting performance or safety. A deep gouge that's exposing metal underneath, or a dent that's preventing a pot from sitting flat, needs attention.   1. Know What You're Dealing With. Look at your stovetop and determine whether you have a smooth glass cooktop, coil electric burners, or a gas burner setup. Then assess the damage: is it a surface scratch that you can feel with your fingernail but see light through? Is it a deeper gouge that's white or opaque? Is the dent structural—does it prevent cookware from sitting flat or does it affect burner alignment? For gas ranges, check if the dent is on the grate or on the cooktop surface itself. Take a photo in natural light; this will help you decide if repair is worth the effort or if you're better off living with it.
  2. Start With a Clean Slate. Use a damp cloth and warm soapy water to remove all cooking residue, grease, and dust from the stovetop surface. Dry completely with a clean towel. For glass cooktops, you can use a standard glass cleaner after the initial wash. The surface needs to be clean before any repair work—polish or adhesive won't adhere properly or work effectively over grease.
  3. Buff Away Light Scratches. If you have a glass cooktop with light scratches that don't catch your fingernail deeply, use a specialized cooktop scratch remover or polishing cream. Apply a small amount directly to the scratch and rub it in circular motions with a soft cloth, following the product directions. Most products need 2–3 minutes of rubbing. Wipe away excess polish with a damp cloth and buff dry. The polish fills micro-scratches and makes them less visible; it won't eliminate deep gouges but will noticeably improve light surface damage.
  4. Fill Deep Cracks Properly. For a crack that goes all the way through the glass or a deep gouge, you need a high-temperature glass repair adhesive. Clean the crack or gouge area again and let it dry completely. Apply the adhesive according to product instructions—most will have you fill the damage completely, then wipe away excess. Cure time varies from 24 to 48 hours; do not use the stovetop until fully cured. This is a temporary fix and works best for hairline cracks. If the crack is longer than an inch or the damage is extensive, replacement is more reliable than repair.
  5. Swap Out Dead Elements. For coil burners that are dented, cracked, or corroded, replacement is straightforward. Turn off the circuit breaker for your range. Once the element is cool, grab the coil firmly and pull it straight out of its socket—it simply plugs in and can be removed by hand without tools. Take the old element with you to the hardware store to ensure you match the wattage and terminal type. Insert the new element by aligning the terminals and pushing it firmly into the socket until it seats fully. Restore power and test by turning the burner to high; it should heat evenly within 30 seconds.
  6. Tap Out Dents Gently. Dents in gas burner grates are usually cosmetic unless they're so severe the grate won't sit level. Remove the grate by lifting it off the burner supports. If it's just dinged up, soak it in hot soapy water for 15 minutes to loosen stuck debris, then scrub with a stiff brush. For minor dents, place the grate on a sturdy work surface and gently tap the underside of the dent with a rubber mallet, working from underneath to push the dent out. Don't use a steel hammer—it will dent the grate further. Reinstall the grate, making sure it sits flat and level on the burner supports.
  7. Weigh Function vs. Looks. A dent on the stovetop deck (the area between burners) that's merely cosmetic can be left alone. If the dent is preventing cookware from sitting flat or is trapping water and debris, you have limited repair options. For cast iron or steel surfaces, minor dents can sometimes be worked out slightly by careful tapping from underneath with a rubber mallet, but results are unpredictable. For glass cooktops, dents in the glass structure usually require replacement of the entire cooktop surface. Assess whether the dent is actually affecting function—most dents don't—before committing to a pricier repair.
  8. Protect Your Work. Once repaired, protect your stovetop by using cookware with smooth, flat bottoms—rough or warped bottoms scratch glass and dent metal surfaces. Avoid dragging heavy pots across the surface; lift and place them instead. Wipe up spills immediately before they dry and bond to the surface. Use a stovetop cover or heat-resistant mat if you plan to use the cooktop as extra counter space. For glass cooktops, keep abrasive sponges and scouring pads away entirely. These simple habits will keep your repaired surface looking good for years.
  9. Know When to Replace. If damage is extensive—multiple deep scratches, large cracks, severe denting, or corroded burner elements—replacing the entire cooktop may be more cost-effective than attempting multiple repairs. Get a quote from a local appliance parts supplier or contractor. Compare the cost of replacement against the cost of individual part repairs. For a 10+ year old stove, replacement often makes sense; for newer models, individual part replacement is usually cheaper. Also factor in your hassle tolerance: if you're tired of the damage affecting your experience, replacement gives you a fresh start.
