How to Fix Sagging or Misaligned Cabinet Hinges
Sagging cabinet doors are one of the most common kitchen frustrations, but they rarely require replacing hardware. Over time, the constant weight of the wood pulls on the mounting screws, or the repeated motion of opening and closing vibrates the adjustment screws loose. A door that rubs against the frame or sits crooked is almost always a sign that the hinge tension has shifted. Fixing this is a matter of patience rather than brute force. You are effectively calibrating the door to sit perfectly within its frame. When done well, the door gap is consistent on all sides, the door closes silently, and it stays firmly in place without swinging open on its own. Spend five minutes tuning these, and your kitchen will feel significantly more polished.
- Tighten Loose Mounting Screws. Open the cabinet door and examine the mounting screws that hold the hinge plate to the inside of the cabinet carcass. Tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver, ensuring the plate sits perfectly flush against the wood.
- Fine-Tune Door Depth. Locate the back screw on the hinge arm, which controls the depth of the door. Turn it slightly to move the door closer to or further away from the cabinet box until the face of the door is flush with the frame.
- Fix Side-to-Side Gaps. Use the front screw on the hinge arm to shift the door left or right within the opening. This is the primary control for fixing gaps between double doors or rubbing against the side of the frame.
- Level the Vertical Height. Loosen the mounting screws on the hinge plate slightly to allow for vertical movement. Slide the door up or down into the desired position, then tighten the screws firmly to lock it in place.
- Verify Smooth Closure. Close the door slowly to observe how it interacts with the frame. If it still catches, revisit the side-to-side adjustment to gain a bit more clearance.
- Silence Squeaks with Lubricant. Apply a tiny drop of silicone-based lubricant to the hinge pivot points if the door squeaks or feels stiff. Wipe away any excess oil with a clean rag immediately.
