How to Fix a Leaking Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are workhorses that rarely ask for attention until they decide to pool water across your cabinet floor. When you spot that telltale dampness, don't rush to replace the entire unit. Most leaks are simple mechanical failures caused by vibration over time, which loosens connections or degrades the rubber seals meant to keep water inside the sink flange assembly. Done well, this repair restores a watertight seal without needing a plumber's hourly rate. You are looking for a clean, dry cabinet floor once the job is finished. Work methodically, keep a bucket handy, and focus on the connection points where the disposal meets the sink—that is almost always where the trouble hides.

  1. Clear Your Workspace First. Remove all cleaning supplies and items from under the sink to create a clear workspace. Place a bucket or a shallow pan directly under the disposal to catch residual water when you disconnect lines.
  2. Kill the Power First. Unplug the disposal from the outlet or turn off the circuit breaker in your electrical panel. Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose and the P-trap waste pipe using slip-joint pliers.
  3. Lower the Unit Slowly. Support the weight of the disposal with one hand and turn the mounting ring counter-clockwise using a screwdriver inserted into the mounting ears. Lower the unit gently from the sink flange.
  4. Tighten Bolts in Star Pattern. Check if the sink flange has rotated or if the mounting bolts are loose. Tighten the three mounting bolts evenly in a star pattern to ensure the flange gasket compresses uniformly against the sink bottom.
  5. Swap Out Cracked Gaskets. Examine the rubber gasket located between the disposal and the mounting flange. If it is cracked, flattened, or brittle, replace it with a new gasket specific to your disposal model.
  6. Run the Water Test Now. Lift the disposal back onto the mounting ring and lock it into place. Reconnect the drain lines and the power supply, then run water for two minutes to check for any slow drips.
