How to Fix a Leaky Kitchen Faucet

Drips represent more than just wasted water; they are a constant, rhythmic reminder of a failing component inside your faucet assembly. Whether you have a single-handle lever or a dual-handle bridge style, the culprit is almost always a worn rubber washer, a degraded O-ring, or a mineral-crusted cartridge that has lost its ability to create a watertight seal. Fixing this is a rite of passage for every homeowner, and it rarely requires calling a professional. Once you bypass the initial intimidation of turning off your water supply, the repair is essentially a series of unthreading and re-threading parts. Focus on keeping your drain covered and your small parts organized, and you will have your kitchen sink back in service in under an hour.

1. Stop the Water First. Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise until they stop. Open the faucet handle to bleed out remaining pressure and confirm the water flow has completely ceased.
2. Free the Faucet Handle. Use a hex key or small screwdriver to loosen the set screw hidden under the handle's decorative cap or on the side of the lever. Pull the handle firmly upward or outward to reveal the valve assembly.
3. Pull Out the Cartridge. Unscrew the decorative bonnet nut using an adjustable wrench. Gently pull the cartridge straight up and out of the faucet body, noting its orientation for reinstallation.
4. Check for Damage. Examine the cartridge and the inside of the faucet body for debris or cracked rubber rings. Clean away any calcium deposits with a soft brush and vinegar.
5. Seat New Seals Perfectly. Slide your new O-rings or the replacement cartridge into position, ensuring they are seated squarely. If using a new cartridge, match the alignment tabs on the base to the slots inside the faucet body.
6. Verify the Seal Works. Reattach the bonnet nut, tighten it firmly by hand, and replace the handle. Slowly open the shut-off valves and check for leaks while running the faucet to flush out any loose sediment.
