How to Fix a Slow Draining Kitchen Sink
DRAINAGE issues in the kitchen usually stem from a buildup of grease, food particles, or mineral deposits trapped in the plumbing under your sink. When water begins to pool, it is a clear sign that the velocity of the water leaving the basin is being restricted by an accumulation of organic matter, rather than a catastrophic failure of your home's main sewer line. Fixing this is a standard maintenance task that requires nothing more than basic hand tools and a bit of patience. By systematically checking the trap and the downstream piping, you can restore full functionality without calling a professional. Done well, your sink will drain with a clean, audible vortex, ensuring no stagnant water remains to harbor bacteria or odors.
- Clear the workspace first. Empty everything from the cabinet beneath the sink. Lay down an old towel or a plastic tray to catch any residual water that spills when you loosen the pipe fittings.
- Disconnect the P-trap. Place a bucket directly under the U-shaped pipe, known as the P-trap. Loosen the plastic slip nuts on both ends of the trap by turning them counter-clockwise; use tongue-and-groove pliers if they are too tight to turn by hand.
- Scrub out the blockage. Remove the trap and dump the contents into the bucket. Use a stiff-bristled bottle brush or a piece of wire to remove any congealed grease or debris from inside the pipe.
- Clear the tailpiece too. Look up into the tailpiece extending down from the sink drain. Use a drain snake or a gloved finger to reach up and pull out any hair or gunk caught in the strainer crosshairs.
- Reattach the P-trap. Slide the P-trap back into place, ensuring the slip washers are oriented correctly with the tapered side facing the connection. Hand-tighten the nuts firmly, then give them an additional quarter-turn with pliers to ensure they are watertight.
- Verify no leaks remain. Turn on the faucet and run hot water at full pressure for at least two minutes. Check each connection point carefully for any sign of moisture or dripping.
