How to Fix Soft-Close Cabinet Hinges That Won't Stay Closed
Soft-close hinges are a staple of modern kitchen cabinetry, designed to pull the door shut the final few inches to prevent slamming. When they stop working, they usually either leave the door slightly ajar or lose their hydraulic resistance entirely, leaving the door to bounce open. This is almost always a mechanical failure of the adjustment mechanism or a leak in the internal oil-based damper. Fixing these doesn't require a professional, but it does require a steady hand and an eye for alignment. Before assuming the hinge is broken, you must rule out simple hinge misalignment, which is the most common cause of a door failing to catch its frame. If the hardware is structurally sound, you are likely only a few turns of a screwdriver away from smooth, quiet closing again.
- Clear the Hinge Path First. Open the door and clear any debris, dust, or grease buildup from the hinge mechanism and the strike plate. Check that no pantry items are pushing against the inside of the door, preventing it from reaching the closed position.
- Secure Before Adjusting. Check the screws that secure the hinge plate to the cabinet frame and the hinge arm to the door. Loose mounting screws prevent the hinge from applying the necessary leverage to keep the door tight against the frame.
- Dial In the Tension. Locate the small tension screw on the hinge arm, usually marked with a plus and minus sign. Turn the screw clockwise in small increments to increase the closing force, testing the door after every quarter turn.
- Center the Door Frame. If the door remains ajar, use the adjustment screw furthest from the cabinet frame to shift the door inward. Adjusting this centers the door in the opening, ensuring the magnet or the catch makes proper contact.
- Spot Hydraulic Failure. Look at the small plastic or metal cylinder on the hinge arm. If it is leaking oil or visibly bent, the internal hydraulic piston has failed and the entire hinge unit requires replacement.
- Install the Replacement Unit. Remove the old hinge by unscrewing it from the cabinet side and the door cup. Install a replacement hinge of the exact same brand and model number to ensure the mounting holes align perfectly.
