How to Fix a Range Hood Damper That Won't Close

Range hood dampers are simple one-way valves that let cooking exhaust escape outside but prevent cold air and pests from flowing back into your kitchen. When one stops closing, you're looking at wasted conditioned air, potential odors creeping back, and rodents eyeing an open door. The fix is almost always mechanical—grease, debris, or a bent component jamming the flapper—and you can handle it yourself without calling a technician. The goal is to restore smooth closure so the damper seals quietly and completely every time the hood shuts off.

  1. Kill Power First. Switch off the range hood at the wall control, then flip the breaker serving the hood to kill all power. Wait 30 seconds for any residual current to discharge. This keeps you safe while you work with the damper housing and electrical connections.
  2. Find the Damper. Locate where your ductwork exits to the outside. If your hood vents through the roof, you may need to go up there; if it vents through a wall or soffit, access it from outside. Open or remove the exterior damper cover or trim ring so you can see and reach the damper flapper. If the damper is installed inside the duct above the hood (less common), you may need to remove ductwork connections to reach it.
  3. Spot the Problem. Look at the damper flapper closely. You'll typically see a metal or plastic hinged flap. Check for grease buildup, lint, dust, or food debris around the hinge and on both faces of the flap. This is the most common culprit. Use a flashlight if you can't see clearly into the duct.
  4. Degrease the Flapper. Spray a kitchen degreaser or general-purpose cleaner directly onto the flapper, hinge points, and the interior surface of the damper frame. Let it sit for 2–3 minutes to break down grease, then wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel. Use an old toothbrush to scrub around the hinge pin and any crevices. Work from both sides if accessible. Repeat until the flapper moves freely by hand and you see no grease residue.
  5. Check for Bent Parts. Once clean, manually open and close the damper flapper several times. It should move smoothly and return to closed position on its own if there's a spring, or fall closed if gravity-operated. If the flapper moves but won't close, look for the spring or check if the hinge pin is bent. A bent pin will cause binding. The spring, if present, should be intact and attached at both ends—a broken spring won't pull the flapper closed.
  6. Straighten the Hinge. If the hinge pin is bent, remove it by unbolting or removing the clip holding it in place (check both sides of the hinge). Lay the pin on a solid surface and gently tap it straight with a hammer, or replace it with a new pin of the same diameter and length. Reinstall and test the flapper motion—it should now open and close without binding.
  7. Replace the Spring. If the flapper won't close on its own and a spring is present, the spring may be broken or stretched. Remove the old spring by unbolting or unclipping it from the flapper and frame. Take it to a hardware store to match the size, or order online using the damper model number if it's a proprietary spring. Install the new spring in the same orientation as the old one, ensuring both ends are firmly anchored.
  8. Lubricate the Hinge. Once the damper is clean and all components are straight or replaced, apply a light machine oil or silicone lubricant to the hinge pin and pivot points. Work the flapper open and closed several times to distribute the lubricant, then wipe away excess with a cloth. Do not over-oil—excess will attract dust and grease.
  9. Test the Closure. Go back inside the kitchen and restore power to the hood breaker. Turn on the hood for 30 seconds to let it run, then turn it off. Listen and feel at the hood outlet or look up into the ductwork above the hood (if visible) to confirm the damper flapper is closing completely. You should hear a soft tap as it seats. Turn the hood on again and listen for any rattling—the damper should seal silently.
  10. Seal the Cap. Once the damper is working, reinstall the exterior damper cap, trim ring, or cover in reverse order of removal. Ensure it's sealed tightly to prevent air leaks or pests entering around the edges. If there's a rubber gasket, make sure it's seated evenly all the way around.
  11. Verify Silent Operation. Turn the hood to its highest speed and let it run for one minute. Listen for any noise from the damper—squeaking, rattling, or fluttering suggests something isn't quite right. If it's quiet and the hood pulls air normally without whistling, you're done. Turn it off and confirm closure one last time.
