How to Replace a Stovetop Burner Element

Burner elements fail. They heat unevenly, cycle on and off, or stop working altogether. The good news is that replacing one is one of the easiest kitchen repairs you can do—no tools required, no wiring, no real risk. The element simply unplugs from a ceramic or metal socket built into your stovetop. You walk into a hardware store, buy a replacement that matches your stove's model number, come home, and swap it out. This guide covers the two common styles: coil elements that twist out, and smooth-top elements that may slide or drop out. Either way, you'll have heat back in ten minutes.

  1. Find Your Stove's Identity. Look for a metal tag or label on the inside of your oven door, on the back of the range behind the stovetop, or occasionally on the side. Write down the full model number exactly as printed. This number tells you which element size and style your stove uses—coil, smooth-top, or other. Some stores can look this up while you wait, but having it written down saves a trip back.
  2. Cool Before You Touch. If you've been using the stove, wait at least an hour for the entire cooking surface to cool. Even if the broken element isn't hot, the socket it plugs into can retain heat. Touch the ceramic or metal ring around the socket—it should be cool to the touch before you proceed. A burned hand is not worth the five minutes you save.
  3. Get the Right Replacement. Go to a hardware store or order online using your model number. Tell the staff you need a replacement burner element for your specific stove model. Show them a photo of the old element if you have one—they'll match the size, shape, and terminal type. Don't guess on size; elements come in different diameters (typically 6-inch, 7-inch, or 8-inch for coils), and an undersized element won't seat properly.
  4. Locate the Dead Burner. Look at your stovetop from above. You'll see four burner positions, each with a socket that may or may not have an element in it. If your element is missing or severely damaged, note its position (front-left, front-right, back-left, back-right). If it's still there but broken, you're looking at it. Don't remove anything yet—just confirm you're working on the right socket.
  5. Unscrew and Extract. Grasp the element near the ceramic or metal ring where it seats into the socket. For coil elements, the terminal end is underneath; twist the element counterclockwise (like unscrewing) while pulling up gently. You'll feel slight resistance—this is normal. Keep twisting and pulling until the prongs fully clear the socket opening. Some elements don't twist; they simply pull straight up. If it won't twist after a quarter turn, switch to straight-up pulling.
  6. Slide Out the Burner. Some newer or flat-top stoves have elements that slide or drop from a recessed pocket under the glass. Look at how the element is oriented relative to its housing. Gently pull or slide it in the direction it seems designed to exit—usually straight toward you or to one side. Once you've removed enough of the element to grip the terminal end, continue pulling until it's fully out. The socket opening will be clear and ready for the new element.
  7. Check the Socket. Look into the empty socket. It should be clean, dry, and free of corrosion. If you see rust, mineral deposits, or burned-on food, use a dry cloth or soft brush to gently clean the interior prongs or contacts. Do not use water—the socket must be completely dry before you install a new element. If the socket looks severely corroded or pitted, take a photo and call a repair service; the socket itself may be failing.
  8. Align the New Element. Hold the new element so its prongs or terminal end face the socket opening. For coil elements, the prongs should point toward the socket, and the ring or collar should sit flush with the stovetop surface once installed. For smooth-top elements, align it with the recessed pocket and slide or place it so it'll seat fully. Take a moment to verify the alignment—rushing this step can bend prongs or damage the socket.
  9. Screw or Slide Home. For coil elements, push the element into the socket while twisting clockwise (like screwing). You'll feel it seat with a slight click or firm resistance—don't overforce it. The ring should sit flush against the stovetop surface. For smooth-top elements, push or slide it fully into the pocket until it's flush and seated. Either way, the element should not wiggle or rock once installed. If it does, remove it, check the prongs for bends, and try again.
  10. Confirm Low-Heat Operation. Turn on the stovetop control dial or touchpad for that burner and set it to the lowest setting. Wait two to three minutes and watch for the element to begin glowing red or the surface to warm. It should start heating immediately and evenly. If nothing happens, turn the burner off, remove the element, double-check the socket for debris or damage, and reinstall it. If it still doesn't work, the socket may be faulty—call a repair service.
  11. Push to Full Power. Once you've confirmed the element works on low, gradually increase the heat to medium and then full power. Watch the element glow more brightly or feel the temperature climb steadily. The heating should be uniform across the coil or surface—no dark spots, no flickering, no cycling on and off. Use it for five minutes at full power to be sure. If everything looks good, you're done.
