How to Fix a Loose Wall Outlet

Wall outlets are the workhorses of your living room, yet they frequently fall victim to loose connections caused by years of plugging and unplugging heavy power cords. A loose outlet is more than just a nuisance; it puts unnecessary strain on your electrical wires and can eventually create a fire hazard if the connection inside the box becomes compromised. Fixing this is a straightforward repair that requires nothing more than a screwdriver and a little bit of patience. When done well, your outlet will sit flush against the wall, perfectly rigid and completely safe, ensuring a stable connection for your electronics every single time.

1. Kill the Power First. Go to your main electrical panel and flip the circuit breaker serving the room where the outlet is located. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the outlet to verify the power is off before proceeding.
2. Free the Cover Plate. Unscrew the center screw or the two perimeter screws holding the decorative cover plate in place. Carefully pry the plate away from the wall and set it aside.
3. Spot the Real Problem. Examine the two long screws that secure the electrical outlet to the junction box. If the outlet is wobbly, these screws are likely loose or the box itself is recessed too far back into the wall.
4. Bridge the Gap. If the screws are tight but the outlet still moves, you need an outlet shim. Slide these plastic spacers over the mounting screws between the outlet and the wall box to bridge the gap.
5. Lock It Flush. Tighten the mounting screws down until the outlet is held firmly in place. Ensure the outlet is level and aligned properly with the wall opening.
6. Seal and Test. Place the cover plate back over the outlet and drive the screws in until snug. Turn the breaker back on and test the outlet for stability.
