How to Replace Old Recessed Lights with IC-Rated Housings
Recessed lighting, or 'can' lights, are a staple of modern living spaces, but older installations often lack the insulation-contact (IC) rating necessary for today's energy-efficient homes. An IC-rated housing is engineered to safely touch attic insulation without creating a fire hazard. Upgrading these fixtures is a foundational task that improves both the safety of your electrical system and the thermal performance of your home. Done well, this project eliminates gaps where conditioned air escapes into your ceiling cavity and ensures you meet current fire safety standards. You are essentially swapping an outdated heat-trapping metal can for a modern, sealed unit designed to work in harmony with modern fiberglass or cellulose insulation. Take your time with the electrical connections, and always prioritize a secure mechanical mount to the joists.
- Kill Power First. Switch off the circuit breaker for the light fixtures at the main panel. Remove the existing light bulb and pull down the trim ring to expose the housing, then unclip the springs holding the trim in place.
- Extract Old Fixture. Access the junction box attached to the side of the housing. Loosen the screws holding the housing to the ceiling joists or the hanger bars, and carefully pull the entire assembly down through the hole.
- Disconnect Wires Safely. Open the junction box cover on the old fixture and disconnect the black, white, and ground wires. Save these wires for the new unit, but remove the cable clamp if it is integrated into the old box.
- Stage New Housing. Adjust the hanger bars on the new IC-rated housing to fit the distance between your ceiling joists. Snap the junction box onto the housing frame and pre-install the cable connector.
- Secure and Connect. Insert the housing into the ceiling opening and hammer the hanger bar ends into the joists. Feed the house wires into the junction box, strip the ends, and connect them to the fixture wires using wire nuts—black to black, white to white, and green or copper to the ground screw.
- Trim and Test. Secure the junction box cover, tuck the box into the ceiling space, and install the new trim kit or LED module. Restore power at the breaker and toggle the switch to confirm operation.
