How to Fix a Dripping Bathtub Faucet
Most dripping bathtub faucets can be fixed by replacing worn washers, O-rings, or cartridges, depending on your faucet type.
- Stop the Flow First. Locate the water shut-off valves behind your bathtub or turn off the main water supply to your home. Turn the handles clockwise to close them completely. Turn on the faucet to drain any remaining water from the lines.
- Expose the Stem. Look for a screw on top of the handle or hidden under a decorative cap. Remove the screw and pull the handle straight off. Some handles twist off counterclockwise. If the handle is stuck, use a handle puller or gentle heat from a hair dryer to loosen it.
- Know Your Enemy. Look at what's exposed after removing the handle. Compression faucets have a packing nut around a stem. Ball faucets have a rounded cap. Cartridge faucets have a cylindrical cartridge. Ceramic disk faucets have a wide cylinder with ports on the bottom.
- Swap the Worn Parts. For compression faucets, unscrew the packing nut and replace the rubber washer and O-ring on the stem. For cartridge faucets, pull out the old cartridge with pliers and insert an exact replacement. For ball faucets, replace the seats, springs, and O-rings. For ceramic disk faucets, lift out the cylinder and replace the inlet seals.
- Put It Back Together. Install all components in reverse order, ensuring everything sits properly. Hand-tighten connections first, then use tools to snug them without overtightening. Replace the handle and secure with the original screw.
- Confirm the Fix Works. Turn the water supply back on slowly. Check for leaks around all connections. Turn the faucet on and off several times to ensure smooth operation and verify the dripping has stopped.
