How to Replace a Missing Roof Shingle
Remove the damaged shingle by lifting the overlapping shingles above and pulling out the nails, then slide a new matching shingle into place and secure with roofing nails.
- Assess Before You Climb. Wait for dry, calm weather and use a sturdy ladder with someone spotting you. Examine the missing shingle area to see if surrounding shingles are damaged or if the roof decking underneath needs attention. Check if you have matching replacement shingles from leftover materials or note the brand and color to purchase replacements.
- Clear the Old Debris. Carefully lift the shingles in the row above the missing one using a flat pry bar. Look for any torn pieces of the old shingle still attached and gently pull them out. Remove any old nails that are sticking up using the pry bar or nail puller.
- Trim and Ready Your Shingle. Take your replacement shingle and check that it matches the size and style of the existing ones. If the new shingle is slightly larger, trim it with a utility knife to fit properly. Make sure the shingle is clean and free of any packaging debris.
- Slide Into Perfect Alignment. Slide the new shingle into position under the overlapping shingles above, aligning it with the shingles on either side. The bottom edge should line up perfectly with the rest of the row. Push it up until it sits flush against the row above.
- Nail It Down Right. Lift the overlapping shingles above and nail the new shingle in place with 1¼-inch roofing nails. Drive one nail about 1 inch from each end of the shingle and two more nails spaced evenly between them, all about ½ inch above the exposure line. Make sure nail heads are flush but not overdriven.
- Seal and Blend Complete. Apply a small dab of roofing cement under each corner of the new shingle and under any lifted edges of surrounding shingles. Press everything down firmly. Check that all shingles lay flat and that the repair blends seamlessly with the existing roof.
