How to Fix a Small Hole in Your Window Screen

Small holes in window screens can be fixed with clear nail polish for tiny punctures or a patch kit for larger tears up to an inch wide.

  1. Clear the Work Zone. Remove the screen from the window if possible, or work with it in place. Use a soft brush or cloth to clean dirt and debris from around the hole. This helps patches and repairs adhere properly.
  2. Pick Your Technique. For holes smaller than a pencil eraser, use clear nail polish. For holes up to half an inch, use screen repair tape. For holes up to one inch, use a patch kit with mesh material.
  3. Seal Small Punctures. Dab clear nail polish directly over small punctures and let it dry completely. Apply a second coat if needed. The polish creates a transparent seal that keeps insects out while maintaining visibility.
  4. Tape Medium Tears. Cut a piece of screen repair tape slightly larger than the hole. Remove the backing and press the tape firmly over the damage from both sides of the screen. Smooth out any air bubbles with your finger.
  5. Weave the Mesh Patch. Cut a square patch from screen material that extends at least half an inch beyond the hole on all sides. Remove a few strands from each edge to create frayed ends. Place the patch over the hole and weave the frayed edges through the existing screen mesh.
  6. Lock It Down. Once the patch edges are woven through, use a small amount of clear nail polish or screen adhesive at the corners to lock everything in place. Let dry completely before reinstalling the screen.
