How to Replace a Failed HVAC Capacitor

Capacitors serve as the heart-starters for your air conditioner, providing the high-voltage jolt required to get the compressor and fan motors running. Over time, these components degrade, bulge, or leak oil, leaving your outdoor unit humming fruitlessly while the interior remains warm. Identifying a failed capacitor is straightforward if you know what to look for, and replacing one is a rite of passage for any serious homeowner. Done well, this repair restores cooling performance in minutes for a fraction of a service call. The key lies in extreme caution: capacitors store a lethal electrical charge even after the power is cut. By following a rigid safety protocol and matching your replacement specs exactly, you can reliably bring your system back to life without calling in professional help.

  1. Cut Power First. Locate the electrical disconnect box next to your outdoor unit and pull the safety handle or flip the switch to the off position. For extra safety, shut off the dedicated dual-pole breaker in your main home electrical panel.
  2. Drain Lethal Charge. Use an insulated screwdriver to bridge the metal terminals on the old capacitor. This creates a short that drains any residual energy, preventing a painful shock during removal.
  3. Document Wire Positions. Take a clear, detailed photo of how the wires are currently connected to the capacitor terminals. Note which wire goes to C (Common), HERM (Compressor), and FAN.
  4. Disconnect Old Capacitor. Loosen the mounting strap holding the capacitor to the housing and disconnect the spade terminals one by one. If they are tight, use needle-nose pliers to pull them straight off the tab without wiggling.
  5. Mount Matching Replacement. Slide the new capacitor into the mounting bracket, ensuring it matches the exact microfarad (µF) and voltage (VAC) rating of the original. Tighten the strap until secure but avoid overtightening and denting the aluminum casing.
