How to Organize Garage Wall Space with French Cleats

Garages often become black holes where tools go to disappear, buried under layers of dust and clutter. The secret to reclaiming your square footage isn't buying expensive cabinets, but utilizing the vertical real estate you already have. By moving your gear off the floor and onto the walls, you transform a disorganized workspace into a functional shop where every tool is visible and ready for the job. Installing a French cleat system is the gold standard for garage organization because it allows for total customization. Unlike static pegboard, a French cleat lets you slide, swap, and add tool holders as your collection grows. When done well, your wall becomes a living inventory that adapts to your work habits rather than forcing you to work around your storage.

  1. Find Every Stud First. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs and mark them with a pencil. Plan your cleat rows horizontally across the wall, ensuring each cleat intersects at least three studs for maximum support.
  2. Cut the Angle Right. Take your 2x4 lumber and set your table saw blade to a 45-degree angle. Rip the boards down the center to create two matching angled pieces; these interlocking angles are what hold your tools securely.
  3. Secure to Every Stud. Level your first cleat against the wall and drive 3-inch wood screws through the cleat and directly into the center of each marked stud. Repeat this for all planned rows, checking the level frequently to ensure the system remains true.
  4. Match the Angles Perfectly. Create small wooden cradles or backer boards to hold specific tools. Attach a matching 45-degree cleat to the back of each holder, ensuring the angle matches the wall cleat perfectly.
  5. Hook and Test Everything. Test each tool holder by hooking it onto the wall cleats. If a holder wobbles, adjust the backer board to ensure it sits flush against the wall.
  6. Label for Easy Recall. Once the layout feels right, use a paint marker or tape to label the position of specific tools. This helps you maintain the system and quickly identify if a tool is missing.
