How to Clean a Front Load Washing Machine Drum

Clean your front load washer drum monthly by running an empty hot water cycle with 2 cups white vinegar, followed by a second cycle with 1/2 cup baking soda to eliminate odors and buildup.

  1. Clear the Drum First. Remove all clothing and check pockets for any remaining items. Wipe down the drum walls with a damp cloth to remove visible lint, hair, or debris. Look for any stains or buildup around the door seal and drum edges.
  2. Scrub the Gasket Clean. Pull back the rubber gasket around the door opening and wipe thoroughly with a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. Pay special attention to the bottom fold where water and debris collect. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any mold or soap scum buildup.
  3. Vinegar Dissolves Buildup. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum. Set your machine to the hottest, longest cycle available without adding any detergent. The vinegar will break down soap residue, mineral deposits, and kill bacteria throughout the wash system.
  4. Neutralize and Deodorize. After the vinegar cycle completes, sprinkle 1/2 cup baking soda directly into the drum. Run another hot water cycle to neutralize any remaining vinegar and eliminate odors. The baking soda will also help remove stubborn stains and freshen the machine.
  5. Dispenser Gets Fresh Too. Remove the detergent drawer completely and soak it in warm soapy water for 10 minutes. Scrub away any hardened detergent or fabric softener residue with an old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and dry before replacing.
  6. Air Dry and Prevent Mold. Run one more hot water cycle with no additives to remove any remaining cleaning solution. When complete, wipe down all surfaces with a clean, dry cloth and leave the door open for several hours to air dry and prevent future mold growth.
