How to Clean a Dishwasher Filter

Remove the bottom dish rack, unscrew the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the dishwasher, rinse it under hot water while scrubbing with a soft brush, then reinstall.

  1. Clear the Floor First. Pull out the bottom dish rack completely and set it aside. This gives you clear access to the dishwasher floor where the filter is located.
  2. Extract the Filter. Look for a cylindrical or circular mesh filter at the bottom of the dishwasher tub, usually in the center or corner. Twist it counterclockwise to unlock it, then lift it straight up. Some models have a two-part filter system with an upper and lower component that come out together.
  3. Blast Away Debris. Hold the filter under hot running water in your kitchen sink. The water pressure will help dislodge loose food particles and grease. Rotate the filter to ensure water reaches all surfaces.
  4. Brush Out the Mesh. Use a soft-bristled brush, old toothbrush, or bottle brush to gently scrub the mesh and remove stuck-on food particles. Pay special attention to the mesh openings where debris commonly gets trapped. Avoid harsh scrubbers that could damage the filter material.
  5. Dissolve Stubborn Grease. For filters with heavy grease buildup, soak in hot soapy water for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing. You can also use a mixture of warm water and white vinegar for extra cleaning power.
  6. Verify Full Clarity. Give the filter a final thorough rinse under hot water. Hold it up to the light to check that all mesh openings are clear and no debris remains visible.
  7. Lock It Down Tight. Place the clean filter back in its housing at the bottom of the dishwasher. Twist it clockwise until it locks securely in place. Make sure it sits flush and doesn't wobble.
  8. Verify It's Working. Slide the bottom dish rack back into position. Run a short rinse cycle to ensure the filter is properly installed and water drains correctly.
