How to Safely Pressure Wash Your Home's Siding

Siding acts as the primary shield for your home, constantly battling wind, rain, and UV rays that slowly degrade its finish and trap grime. While it is tempting to blast away stubborn stains with high-pressure settings, doing so often causes permanent damage to wood, vinyl, or fiber cement, sometimes even forcing water into your wall assembly where it will eventually cause rot. Achieving a professional-looking clean is about choosing the right chemical agent and using the machine as a rinse tool rather than a sandblaster. When done correctly, your siding will look brand new without a single dent or water-logged frame in sight.

  1. Protect Everything Around You. Close all windows and doors securely. Cover nearby delicate plants, light fixtures, and electrical outlets with plastic sheeting and painters tape to protect them from cleaning solutions and stray water.
  2. Coat Bottom to Top. Fill the soap reservoir with a siding-safe detergent. Using a low-pressure black nozzle, apply the soap to the siding starting at the bottom and working your way up to ensure even coverage without streaking.
  3. Attack Mildew Manually. Use a soft-bristled, long-handled siding brush to agitate areas with heavy mildew, oxidation, or bird droppings. Scrubbing now prevents the need to get dangerously close to the siding with the pressure nozzle later.
  4. Choose the Correct Nozzle. Switch to a white (40-degree) nozzle for rinsing. Never use the red (0-degree) or yellow (15-degree) tips on siding, as they are strong enough to cut through vinyl or force water behind wood boards.
  5. Rinse Downward Always. Begin at the top of the wall and work downward to chase the soap and dirt toward the ground. Keep the wand at a consistent distance of at least 18 inches from the surface.
  6. Inspect and Clear Ground. Walk the perimeter of the house once everything has dried to check for missed spots or streaks. Remove all plastic covers and tape, then rinse the surrounding ground area thoroughly to clear away any chemical residue.
