How to Clean a Washing Machine Drain Hose
Clean your washing machine drain hose by disconnecting it, flushing with hot water, and removing clogs with a drain snake or wire brush.
- Shut Everything Down First. Unplug your washing machine from the electrical outlet and turn off the water supply valves behind the machine. This prevents accidental startup and water damage while you work.
- Access the Machine's Back. Carefully move your washing machine away from the wall to access the back panel. You need enough space to comfortably reach the drain hose connection. Have someone help you if the machine is heavy.
- Disconnect the Drain Hose. Find the large drain hose that runs from your washing machine to the standpipe or utility sink. Remove the hose clamp with pliers and gently pull the hose from the drain connection. Place a bucket underneath to catch any water that spills out.
- Find the Obvious Clogs. Look inside both ends of the hose for obvious clogs like lint, hair, or small items. Remove anything you can reach by hand. Check the entire length of the hose by holding it up to a light source to spot blockages.
- Blast Out the Debris. Take the hose to a utility sink or bathtub. Run hot water through it from both directions using a garden hose or by holding it under a faucet. The water pressure will push out loose debris and soap buildup.
- Break Up Stubborn Blockages. For persistent blockages, feed a drain snake or straightened wire coat hanger through the hose. Work it back and forth to break up the clog. Follow up with another hot water flush to wash away the loosened debris.
- Dissolve Soap and Buildup. Mix equal parts white vinegar and hot water in a bucket. Pour this solution through the hose and let it sit for 15 minutes to dissolve soap scum and mineral deposits. Rinse thoroughly with clean water afterward.
- Clean the Connection Point. While the hose dries, clean the standpipe or drain connection where the hose attaches. Remove any lint or debris from this area using a flashlight and needle-nose pliers or tweezers.
- Reattach and Secure. Once the hose is completely clean and dry, reattach it to the drain connection. Secure it with the hose clamp, making sure the connection is tight but not over-tightened. Push the washing machine back into position.
- Verify Proper Drainage. Restore power and water supply to your washing machine. Run a short wash cycle without clothes to test that water drains properly and check for any leaks at the hose connection.
