How to Descale a Tankless Water Heater

Descaling a tankless water heater involves flushing the system with a vinegar solution or commercial descaling agent to remove mineral buildup that reduces efficiency and can damage the unit.

  1. Kill the Power First. Switch off the electrical breaker for electric units or turn the gas valve to the off position for gas models. Allow the unit to cool completely for at least 10 minutes before proceeding. This prevents burns and ensures safe working conditions.
  2. Isolate Your System. Locate the cold water inlet and hot water outlet valves on your tankless unit. Turn both valves clockwise to close them completely. This isolates the water heater from your home's water system during the cleaning process.
  3. Link the Circulation Loop. Remove the purge port valve caps from both the cold and hot water lines. Attach washing machine hoses to these ports, ensuring tight connections. Connect the other ends to your circulation pump setup or bucket system for the descaling solution.
  4. Mix Your Cleaning Brew. Mix 4 gallons of white vinegar with 1 gallon of water in a bucket, or use a commercial descaling solution following manufacturer ratios. The solution should be enough to circulate through the system for 45-60 minutes. Position the bucket below the water heater level.
  5. Dissolve the Mineral Buildup. Open the hot water purge port valve and start your circulation pump. The solution will flow through the heat exchanger and return through the cold water port. Let it circulate for 45-60 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits. You may hear bubbling sounds as scale dissolves.
  6. Purge All Cleaning Residue. After descaling, replace the solution with fresh water and circulate for 20 minutes to remove all traces of vinegar or descaling chemicals. This prevents corrosion and eliminates any remaining cleaning residue from the system.
  7. Restore Heat and Flow. Remove all hoses and reinstall the purge port valve caps. Open the water supply valves, turn on the gas or electricity, and run hot water at several fixtures for 5 minutes. Check for proper heating and water flow to ensure everything is working correctly.
