What "decorate" means here — and what it doesn't
Decorate on this site means the cosmetic, mostly reversible layer. Paint. Hardware. Textiles. Art placement. Surface treatments. These are changes that transform how a room reads without altering the structure, the systems, or the permanent surfaces in ways that require a permit or a contractor.
The key word is "mostly reversible." Paint is reversible — you can repaint. A gallery wall is reversible — patch the holes and paint over. Curtain rod placement is reversible — move the brackets. Hardware is reversible — swap the pulls back. This reversibility is not a weakness of the decorate lane; it's its primary feature. Decorating is the category of home improvement where experimentation is cheapest and the learning curve is steepest. The tenth time you paint a room, you're much better at it than the first. Decorate does NOT include: structural changes (that's Build), installing new fixtures or systems (that's Install), fixing what's broken (that's Repair), or major surface refinishing that involves professional equipment (floor refinishing, for example, lives in the trades zone). The decorator's toolkit — what you actually need
You do not need a lot of tools to decorate well. You need a few tools used correctly, and you need to resist the temptation to buy the cheap version of the ones that matter. Here is the honest list:
- A good 2.5-inch angled sash brush ($18–$28). The single most important painting tool. Not the roller — the brush. A cheap brush leaves bristle marks and streaks. A good brush (Purdy, Wooster, or similar) holds a wet edge and cuts in cleanly. The difference in finish quality between a $6 chip brush and a $22 sash brush is larger than the difference between a $22 sash brush and a $60 professional brush. Buy once, buy mid-range, clean thoroughly, keep for a decade.
- A 9-inch microfiber roller with a 3/8-inch nap ($8–$12 for two). The microfiber roller leaves a smoother finish than the standard foam or fabric rollers. The 3/8-inch nap is the right compromise for most interior walls — enough texture to bite into light imperfections, not enough to create an orange-peel finish. Buy two for each paint job so you have a dry one for the second coat without waiting for the first to dry and shed lint.
- FrogTape painter's tape ($12 per roll). Not generic blue tape. FrogTape uses a patented paint-block technology that seals against bleed-through. This matters most on textured surfaces and on sharp color transitions. The guide for every project that involves tape will specify which situations warrant FrogTape vs. standard blue — don't use the expensive tape everywhere, but use it where it counts.
- Sample pots, at least two per color ($5–$8 each). Not optional. The guides all say this and mean it. Paint color in the store, on a chip card, under fluorescent lighting, is a different color than paint on your wall in your room in your light. Buy the sample pot. Apply a 12-by-12-inch patch. Live with it for 48 hours across different lighting conditions — morning, afternoon, evening with lamps. Only then commit to the full gallon.
- A picture-hanging hardware kit ($15). A mixed kit with different hook weights (5, 10, 20, 50 pounds), a bag of picture-hanging nails in two sizes, and a few D-ring screws for larger pieces. Having the right hardware for the right weight on hand means you hang things once instead of twice. The guides specify which hardware to use for which frame weight.
- A 4-foot level ($28–$34). Also essential for curtain rod placement and gallery walls. A 4-foot level reads truer than a shorter one across the widths most hanging jobs require. A phone level is close enough for some applications; it is not close enough for a gallery wall across a 6-foot span or a curtain rod that needs to look exactly horizontal. Get the real thing.
- A stud finder ($22). Required for curtain rods, heavy mirrors, and anything else that needs to be anchored solidly. Drywall anchors are fine for pictures under 15 pounds. Everything else goes into a stud. The electronic stud finder finds the edge of the stud reliably; mark both edges and nail into the center.
- Command strips — the large picture-hanging variety ($18 for a pack). Not for everything. But for the renter, the person who doesn't want to patch, or the project where you're still deciding — Command strips are genuinely useful for frames under 16 pounds on smooth, flat surfaces. The guides specify weight limits carefully because the failure mode of a Command strip is more catastrophic than a small hole: a frame crashing at 2 a.m. vs. a 1/8-inch nail hole.
The principles of paint — what the can doesn't tell you
Paint is the highest-leverage tool in the decorate lane, and it's also the most misunderstood. Most first-time painters focus on the color and give no thought to the sheen — which is roughly equivalent to buying a great outfit and not noticing it has a stain on the front. Here is the complete guide to paint decisions that the hardware store display doesn't explain clearly:
- Sheen by room. Eggshell finish for living rooms and bedrooms — it has just enough sheen to be wipeable without reflecting every imperfection in the wall. Satin finish for trim, doors, and kitchen walls — slightly higher sheen, more washable, stands up to fingerprints. Semi-gloss for bathrooms and cabinetry — the sheen repels moisture and holds up to aggressive cleaning. Flat or matte for ceilings, always — sheen on a ceiling catches light and shows every texture irregularity. This is not a rule of taste; it's a rule of physics and maintenance.
- The sample test is not optional. Already said it above, saying it again here. The guides will keep saying it. Paint the sample on the actual wall in the room where it will live. 12 by 12 inches minimum. 48 hours minimum before deciding. Observe it in morning light, afternoon light, and evening lamp light. Colors shift dramatically across those three conditions.
- When to prime. Always prime when going from a dark color to a light color — without primer, you'll need four to six coats of the light color to cover the dark, and you still might not. Always prime when painting over a stain or a water mark — the stain will bleed through any number of topcoat layers without a stain-blocking primer. Always prime raw or new drywall. On a same-color-family repaint (medium gray over medium gray), skip the primer and use a paint-and-primer product if it's available in the sheen you need.
- Cut in first, then roll — never the reverse. Cutting in (the brush work around edges, corners, and trim) while the wall is dry means you're painting a dry edge. Rolling after cutting in means the cut-in edge is still wet and the wet roller blends seamlessly into it. If you roll first and cut in second, you get a visible lap line where the cut-in dries over the rolled paint.
- Never let the roller run dry. A dry roller lifts paint instead of laying it. The wet edge — the leading edge of each roller pass — must be kept wet for the entire wall. Roll in a W or M pattern, then fill in without lifting the roller, working quickly across the wall. Two thin coats beat one thick coat in every metric: adhesion, smoothness, and dry time.
How to plan a gallery wall — the system that works
The gallery wall is the most common project people attempt without a guide and the most common one people do twice because the first attempt didn't look intentional. Here is the system that makes it look intentional on the first try.
- Trace paper templates for every frame. Cut brown paper (grocery bag paper works) to the exact dimensions of each frame. Tape them to the wall with painter's tape. Step back. Live with the arrangement for at least a day before making a single nail hole. Move the templates around freely — this is the stage where iteration is free.
- Set the center of the arrangement at 57 inches from the floor. This is the standard museum hanging height — the average human eye level — and it works in domestic spaces because it was derived from exactly that principle. 57 inches to the center of the arrangement, not to the top or bottom. If you're hanging a single large piece, 57 inches to the center of that piece.
- Keep consistent spacing. Two to three inches between frames for a tight, intentional look. Four to six inches for a more casual arrangement. Pick one spacing and hold it across the whole wall. Inconsistent spacing is what makes gallery walls look accidental instead of curated.
- Mix orientations but hold sizes loosely. A gallery wall with only landscape frames looks flat. A mix of landscape, portrait, and square frames reads dynamic. But don't let the size range be too extreme — a tiny 4-by-4 next to a 24-by-36 makes both pieces look wrong. Keep the largest piece no more than four times the area of the smallest.
Color theory in 60 seconds — what actually matters
You don't need a degree in color theory to decorate well, but three principles will save you from every bad paint decision you'd otherwise make:
- The 60-30-10 rule. 60% of a room's color is the dominant color (usually the walls). 30% is the secondary color (large furniture, rugs, curtains). 10% is the accent color (throw pillows, art, small objects). When a room feels visually chaotic, it usually means these proportions are inverted — too many competing accent colors, or the secondary and dominant colors are too close in value (lightness) to register as different. Fix the proportions before changing any specific color.
- Undertones matter more than hue. "Gray" is not a color. Gray with a blue undertone and gray with a green undertone are different colors in different lighting conditions, and they will respond to your existing furniture and flooring differently. The way to identify undertone: look at the paint chip next to a piece of pure white. The color it turns relative to white is its undertone. Or bring a chip home and look at it next to your existing floor or furniture.
- North light vs. south light. North-facing rooms get cool, indirect light all day. Colors in north-facing rooms will read cooler and more muted than they do in the store — warm undertones help. South-facing rooms get warm, direct light for much of the day. Colors will read brighter and warmer — cooler undertones balance this. This is why the same color looks completely different in two different rooms, and why the sample test is the only reliable answer.
When a designer is worth hiring
Most decorating decisions in this lane are DIY-executable and DIY-decidable. But two specific situations benefit clearly from a professional consultation: whole-home color selection and furniture layout in an open floor plan. A single two-hour session with a color consultant ($150–$300) who comes to your home with chips in hand and looks at your specific light will eliminate six months of wrong guesses and repaints. A furniture layout consultation for a large open space can prevent the $3,000 rug purchase that turns out to be the wrong size. Common decorating mistakes — and how to avoid them

- Choosing paint color in a hardware store under fluorescent lights. Hardware store lighting is specifically calibrated to make every paint chip look good. It is not your home's lighting. Every chip that looks beautiful in the store needs to be tested in the actual room before you commit to four gallons of it.
- Hanging art too high. The most common and most correctable decorating mistake. Art should be hung so the center of the piece is at eye level — approximately 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Most people hang art at or above head height, which makes rooms feel tall in the wrong way (ceiling-heavy) and disconnects the art from the furniture it's meant to anchor.
- Rugs that are too small. The second-most-common living room error. In a seating area, the front legs of all major pieces of furniture should sit on the rug. If only the coffee table is on the rug, or nothing is on the rug and the rug just floats in the center of the room, the rug is too small. Size up before you buy, not after delivery.
- Going dark too fast. Dark accent walls are beautiful when executed well. But dark paint amplifies every surface imperfection — nail holes, skim coat irregularities, old patch marks — that light colors obscure. Before painting a dark accent wall, address the surface prep more carefully than you would for a light color. Spackle, sand, prime with a dark-tinted primer, then paint in two thin coats rather than one thick one.
